How to Make Ranch Turkey Burgers: Essential Ingredients
Crafting the perfect ranch turkey burger starts with selecting high-quality ingredients. Each component plays a crucial role in building the robust flavor profile and delightful texture of this dish. Here’s a detailed look at what you’ll need:
Turkey Burger Patties
- Ground Turkey: The star of our burger, ground turkey offers a leaner, healthier alternative to traditional beef. Its mild flavor provides an excellent canvas for the bold ranch seasoning, resulting in a burger that’s both satisfying and guilt-free. When choosing, opt for 93/7 lean ground turkey for the best balance of flavor and moisture.
- Red Onion: Finely diced red onion adds a subtle sweetness and a sharp, piquant flavor to the patties. As it cooks, the onion caramelizes slightly, contributing depth and a tender texture within the burger.
- Dried Basil: Basil, with its aromatic, slightly sweet, and peppery notes, beautifully complements the herbaceous quality of ranch seasoning. It infuses the turkey patties with a fresh, earthy flavor that makes each bite more complex and enjoyable.
- Ranch Seasoning: This is the defining flavor of our burgers! A good ranch seasoning mix typically contains buttermilk powder, dried parsley, dill, garlic powder, onion powder, dried chives, salt, and pepper. It provides that distinctive tangy, savory, and herby taste that makes these burgers so addictive. For a lower sodium option, consider making your own ranch seasoning blend.
- Black Pepper: Freshly ground black pepper adds a hint of warmth and a subtle kick, enhancing all the other flavors without overpowering them. Always use fresh ground for the best aroma and taste.
Creamy Avocado Ranch Aioli: The Perfect Topping
- Avocado: Ripe avocado is the foundation of our luscious aioli, bringing a rich, creamy texture and a wealth of healthy fats and omega oils. Select an avocado that yields slightly when gently squeezed, indicating perfect ripeness.
- Ranch Seasoning: A touch more ranch seasoning in the aioli ties all the flavors together, reflecting the seasoning in the turkey patties and creating a cohesive taste experience.
- Mayonnaise: Mayonnaise provides a smooth, rich base for the aioli, ensuring a decadent and velvety consistency that coats your palate.
- Sour Cream: Slightly tangier and thinner than mayo, sour cream adds a refreshing creaminess to the aioli, balancing the richness of the avocado and mayonnaise.
- Fresh Garlic Cloves: There’s no substitute for the pungent, vibrant flavor of fresh garlic. It delivers an incomparable depth to the aioli. Mince it finely for an even distribution of flavor.
- Lemon Juice: A squeeze of fresh lemon juice is essential. Its bright acidity cuts through the richness of the aioli, adding a zesty lift and preventing it from being too heavy.
- Sea Salt: Fine-grain sea salt enhances the natural flavors of all the ingredients, especially highlighting the creamy notes of the avocado and the zing of the lemon.
For Assembling Your Burger
- Brioche Buns: While any bun will do, we highly recommend soft, slightly sweet brioche buns. Their rich, buttery flavor and tender texture perfectly complement the savory turkey patty and creamy aioli. Lightly toasting them adds another layer of deliciousness.
- Colby Cheese Slices: Colby cheese is a mild, creamy cheese that melts beautifully, adding a gooey, savory element to your burger. Its subtle flavor doesn’t compete with the ranch but rather enhances it.
- Butter Lettuce: Large, crisp pieces of butter lettuce provide a refreshing crunch and vibrant color. Its delicate flavor won’t overpower the burger, making it an ideal choice for a fresh topping.

Step-by-Step Cooking Method for Pan-Fried Perfection
Once you’ve gathered all your ingredients, it’s time to bring these incredible ranch turkey burgers to life! Follow these simple steps for perfectly cooked, juicy patties and a creamy, flavorful aioli.
- Prepare the Patties: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, diced red onion, dried basil, and most of the ranch seasoning (remember to reserve 2 teaspoons for the aioli). Use a wooden spoon or your hands to gently mix the ingredients until just combined. Overmixing can lead to tough burgers, so be careful not to overwork the meat.
- Form Uniform Patties: To ensure even cooking, it’s crucial to form uniform patties. Use a 1/4 cup measuring scoop for consistent sizing. Roll the mixture into a ball, then gently press down to form a patty approximately 1/4-inch thick and 6 inches in diameter. A pro tip: make a slight indentation in the center of each patty. This prevents the burger from bulging in the middle as it cooks, helping it maintain a flat shape.
- Heat Your Pan: Heat a cast iron skillet or a sturdy grill pan over high heat. Cast iron is excellent for achieving a beautiful, even sear. Once hot, generously spray the pan with a non-stick cooking spray or add a drizzle of high-smoke-point oil like avocado or grapeseed oil.
- Pan-Fry the Burgers: Place 3-4 patties into the hot pan, ensuring not to overcrowd it (this can lower the pan’s temperature and result in steaming instead of searing). Cook for 4 minutes on the first side until a golden-brown crust forms.
- Flip and Finish: Carefully flip the patties and cook for another 4 minutes on the second side. For cheeseburgers, add a slice of Colby cheese to the top of each patty during the last minute of cooking, allowing it to melt into gooey perfection.
- Repeat & Toast Buns: Continue cooking the remaining patties in batches. Once all patties are cooked (ensure they reach an internal temperature of 165°F), lightly toast your brioche buns by placing them cut-side down on the grill pan for about 2 minutes, until golden and warm.
- Whip Up the Aioli: While the burgers are cooking, prepare your avocado ranch aioli. In a food processor or blender, combine the ripe avocado, reserved ranch seasoning, mayonnaise, sour cream, minced garlic cloves, lemon juice, and sea salt. Process until smooth and creamy.
- Assemble and Enjoy: It’s time to build your masterpiece! Spread a generous dollop of the creamy avocado ranch aioli on both halves of a toasted brioche bun. Layer a piece of fresh butter lettuce on the bottom bun, followed by a juicy ranch turkey patty (with melted cheese, if using). Crown it with the top bun and serve immediately.

Air Fryer Ranch Turkey Burgers: Crispy & Convenient
For those who love the convenience and crispy results of an air fryer, these ranch turkey burgers are an excellent option. All your ingredients and initial burger prep will remain the same, but the cooking steps are slightly modified to suit your air fryer:
- Preheat Your Air Fryer: Begin by preheating your air fryer to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175°C). While not strictly essential, preheating ensures more even cooking and helps achieve a perfectly crispy exterior without needing excessive nonstick spray.
- Arrange Patties: Place 3-4 prepared turkey patties into the air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring they do not overlap. The number of patties will depend on the size of your air fryer. Adequate space allows for optimal air circulation and even cooking.
- First Cook Cycle: Air fry the patties for 5 minutes. This initial cooking helps to set the shape and begin developing a delicious crust.
- Flip and Continue: After 5 minutes, carefully flip each patty using tongs. Continue air frying for an additional 4 minutes. This ensures both sides are beautifully browned and cooked through.
- Melt the Cheese: Once 8 minutes of total cooking time have passed, open the air fryer and place a slice of Colby cheese on top of each patty. Close the air fryer and cook for 1 more minute, or until the cheese is perfectly melted and gooey.
- Check for Doneness: Repeat these steps until all your turkey burger patties are cooked. Always verify that the internal temperature of the turkey reaches 165°F (74°C) using a meat thermometer to ensure food safety.

Grilling Turkey Burgers: Smoky Flavor & Perfect Char
For those warm evenings and backyard barbecues, grilling your ranch turkey burgers adds an incredible smoky flavor and beautiful char marks. While the patty preparation remains consistent with our pan-frying method, the grilling steps require specific attention to achieve juicy, perfectly cooked burgers. Here’s how to adapt the recipe for your grill:
- Preheat the Grill: Fire up your grill and heat it to a medium-high temperature, aiming for around 450°F (232°C). Allow it to preheat for at least 5-10 minutes after reaching temperature. This ensures the grates are nice and hot, which is crucial for preventing sticking and achieving a good sear.
- Prepare the Grates: To prevent your turkey burgers from sticking, lightly oil the grill grates. Dip a folded paper towel into a high-smoke-point cooking oil (like vegetable or grapeseed oil) and, using long tongs, carefully wipe the oil onto the hot grates where you plan to place the burgers. Repeat this process a couple of times.
- Grill the Patties: Place the formed turkey burger patties directly onto the hot, oiled grill grates. Leave ample space between each burger to allow for even cooking and proper air circulation.
- First Side Cook: Grill the patties for approximately 6 minutes on the first side. Resist the urge to press down on the burgers with your spatula, as this squeezes out valuable juices and can lead to dry burgers.
- Flip and Continue: Carefully flip the patties to the second side. Continue grilling for another 4 minutes. This ensures a nice crust develops on both sides and the burger cooks through.
- Melt the Cheese and Toast Buns: During the last minute of grilling, place a slice of Colby cheese on top of each patty. At this same time, you can place the cut sides of your brioche buns directly on the cooler parts of the grill grates (or a top rack) to lightly toast them until golden brown.
- Check for Doneness: As with all poultry, it’s vital to ensure turkey burgers are cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) for food safety. Use a reliable meat thermometer to check the thickest part of the patty.

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Ranch Turkey Burgers Every Time
Achieving a perfectly juicy and flavorful ranch turkey burger is simple with these expert tips:
- Embrace Ground Turkey: Choosing ground turkey is not just about health; it’s about a versatile base that takes on flavors beautifully. Its lower fat content makes it a lighter choice, allowing the vibrant ranch seasoning to truly shine.
- Keto-Friendly Option: Easily transform these into keto turkey burgers by ditching the bun. Serve your flavorful patty wrapped in large, crisp lettuce leaves (like butter or iceberg lettuce) for a satisfying, low-carb meal.
- Versatile Cooking Methods: This turkey burger recipe is incredibly adaptable. You can achieve fantastic results whether you pan-fry for a perfect sear, air fry for a crispy exterior, or grill for a smoky, outdoor flavor. Choose the method that best suits your preference and equipment!
- Reduce Calories and Sodium:
- Skipping the bun can save approximately 250 calories per burger, making it an even lighter meal option.
- For a lower-sodium alternative, consider making your own homemade ranch seasoning blend. This allows you to control the salt content while still enjoying that signature ranch flavor.
- Aioli Substitution: While we love the rich texture that mayonnaise provides, if you’re looking for a lighter aioli, plain Greek yogurt can be used in place of mayonnaise. It will lend a tangier flavor and slightly different texture but still create a delicious, creamy sauce.
- Prevent Dry Turkey Burgers: Turkey is leaner than beef, so it can dry out if overcooked. Be mindful of cooking times and always use a meat thermometer to ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) without exceeding it. The dimple trick when forming patties also helps keep them juicy.
- Prepare Ahead: You can mix and form the turkey patties up to 24 hours in advance. Store them covered in the refrigerator until ready to cook. The avocado ranch aioli can also be made a day ahead and stored in an airtight container in the fridge; just give it a good stir before serving.
- Spice It Up: If you enjoy a bit of heat, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce to your turkey patty mixture or the aioli for an extra kick.
Recipe FAQs for Ranch Turkey Burgers
Turkey, like all poultry, is fully cooked and safe to eat when it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). While these burgers generally cook in about 10 minutes on the stovetop or air fryer, and slightly longer on the grill, it’s always best to rely on a meat thermometer rather than just time to ensure proper food safety and prevent overcooking.
Cooked ranch turkey burgers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. They make excellent meal prep options and can be reheated gently in a skillet, microwave, or air fryer.
The turkey patty itself is naturally low in carbohydrates. To make this ranch turkey burger recipe compliant with a keto or low-carb diet, simply skip using a traditional bun. Instead, serve your burger patty and aioli wrapped in large lettuce leaves, such as butter lettuce or iceberg lettuce. This substitution provides a satisfying crunch without the carbs.
Yes, uncooked turkey burger patties can be frozen for future meals! Form the patties as directed, then place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they don’t touch. Freeze for 1-2 hours until firm, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container with parchment paper between each patty to prevent sticking. They will keep for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before cooking.
