Effortless Slow Cooker Meatballs

For those days when you need a truly hands-off approach, these easy meatballs can be perfectly adapted for your slow cooker. This method is ideal for allowing flavors to meld beautifully over several hours, resulting in incredibly tender and flavorful meatballs. If you prefer to use your slow cooker instead of the skillet-then-oven method, simply follow these directions for a delicious, comforting meal with minimal effort:

  • Cook on High for 3-4 hours or Low for 6-8 hours. Always check your meatballs as they cook to ensure they remain moist and don’t dry out. Cooking times can vary slightly depending on your slow cooker model.

  • Brown meatballs if possible. While it adds a small extra step, quickly browning your meatballs in a skillet before transferring them to the slow cooker is highly recommended. This crucial step prevents the meatballs from sticking together and helps to develop a deep, rich, and meaty flavor through the Maillard reaction, which you simply can’t achieve without browning.

  • Add sauce towards the end of cooking. To prevent your sauce from becoming oily, separating, or over-reducing, wait until the meatballs are cooked or almost fully cooked before adding your marinara or desired sauce. Once the sauce is added, let it heat through thoroughly until piping hot, then serve.

  • Add ½ cup beef stock for extra flavor and juicy, moist meatballs (optional). A little beef stock in the slow cooker can significantly enhance the flavor and ensure your meatballs remain wonderfully tender and juicy throughout the slow cooking process.

Essential Tips for Perfect Easy Italian Meatballs

Achieving perfectly tender, flavorful, and easy Italian meatballs is simpler than you might think with these expert tips. Follow these guidelines to ensure your homemade meatballs are a resounding success every time:

  • Mix meatballs in a large bowl by hand. While it might seem a bit messier, mixing and forming your meatballs by hand is truly the best approach. It allows you to feel the texture of the mixture, ensuring all ingredients are evenly combined without overworking the meat, which can lead to tough meatballs. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty for the best results!

  • Use extra grated Parmesan cheese in place of breadcrumbs for a low-carb, keto-friendly meatball recipe. Many traditional meatball recipes rely on breadcrumbs as a binder, but we’re opting for a smarter, more flavorful alternative: extra grated Parmesan cheese. This substitution not only makes these meatballs low-carb and gluten-free but also adds an incredible depth of savory, umami flavor. Plus, Parmesan is often a pantry staple, unlike breadcrumbs!

  • Preheat the oven fully before adding the meatball skillet. After browning your meatballs on the stovetop, it’s crucial that they go into a fully preheated oven. A hot oven ensures they continue cooking quickly and evenly, preventing them from drying out and locking in all those delicious juices.

  • Brown in olive oil. The browning step is absolutely essential for developing that irresistible rich and delicious flavor that defines the best meatballs. Simply heat a little olive oil on medium-high heat until it shimmers, then carefully place your formed meatballs in the skillet. Brown them on all sides for about 6 minutes in total. The meat won’t be fully cooked at this stage, and that’s perfectly fine, as they will finish cooking in the oven. This initial browning contributes significantly to both the flavor and the texture of the finished meatballs.

  • Stuff bits of mozzarella sticks into meatballs for a decadently cheesy surprise! For an extra cheesy kick, try this fun twist: cut string cheese mozzarella sticks into 1-inch pieces and gently wrap your meatball mixture around them before browning. When cooked, you’ll be treated to a gooey, melted mozzarella core in every bite!

  • Prepare your casserole dish or baking sheet with cooking spray. A well-prepared nonstick surface is key to preventing your meatballs from sticking and making cleanup a breeze. Lightly grease your baking sheet or casserole dish before transferring the browned meatballs to the oven.

  • Finish meatballs in marinara sauce. If you’re making traditional meatballs to serve with pasta or as a main dish, cook them until they are done or almost done. Then, ladle your favorite marinara sauce over them and gently stir to coat each meatball. Continue baking the meatballs in the marinara sauce until it’s bubbling and piping hot. For an extra decadent touch, I often add a generous sprinkle of shredded mozzarella cheese over the top at this stage, allowing it to melt into a cheesy, bubbling blanket for a truly satisfying one-pot meatball skillet. Serve immediately and enjoy!

The Best Easy Meatballs Recipe – delicious easy meatballs cooked in a skillet for a delicious, hearty, and rich dinner that the whole family loves. Low carb keto easy meatballs that are delicious on their own or in sandwiches, over pasta, or in soups.

Equipment

  • Anolon X SearTech Aluminum Nonstick Cookware Frying Pan Set, 2-Piece, Super Dark Gray
  • USA Pan Bakeware Heavy Duty Half Sheet, Warp Resistant Nonstick Baking Pan

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound mild Italian sausage
  • ¼ cup onion, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons parsley, chopped
  • 2 eggs
  • cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • tsp fresh ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, Italian sausage, minced onion, minced garlic, chopped parsley, eggs, and grated Parmesan cheese.
  • Sprinkle the meat mixture with sea salt, fresh ground black pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, and Italian seasoning. Add additional salt and pepper to taste, if desired.
  • Using your hands, gently mix all ingredients until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, which can make the meatballs tough.
  • Form the mixture into 1 to 2-inch meatballs. This recipe should yield approximately 25 meatballs.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to a large, heavy-bottomed skillet and heat over medium-high heat until the oil is shimmery.
  • Carefully place the meatballs into the hot skillet and brown them lightly on all sides, turning occasionally, for about 6 minutes total. The meatballs will not be fully cooked at this point.
  • While the meatballs are browning, lightly grease a baking sheet or a casserole dish with cooking spray.
  • Transfer the browned meatballs to the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74°C) and they are slightly reduced in size.
  • If desired, add your favorite marinara sauce over the cooked meatballs in the baking dish and continue cooking for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the sauce is piping hot and bubbling. You can also add shredded mozzarella cheese on top during this step for an extra cheesy finish.
  • Serve these delicious meatballs over spaghetti, with a side of vegetables, over rice, or simply alongside fresh bread. Enjoy!
