An Epic Exploration of Bilbao, Spain & The Basque Coast

My recent visit to Basque Country began with a professional conference, a wonderful opportunity that was followed by an incredible press trip organized by Euskadi, the official tourism bureau for Basque Country. This invitation led me on a spectacular journey to discover some of the Bilbao region’s most breathtaking coastal sites and savor its renowned culinary offerings. It was an immersive experience that truly showcased the diverse beauty and rich culture of this unique Spanish region.

One of the highlights of my trip was a leisurely riverboat ride aboard the brand-new electric vessels provided by the Bilbao River Company. This eco-friendly cruise offered the perfect vantage point for a slow, scenic party along the historic Nervión river/estuary. We glided serenely from the bustling city center down to Gexto, passing under the iconic Hanging Bridge, an impressive feat of engineering and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The river tour provided a fresh perspective on Bilbao’s evolving cityscape, blending industrial heritage with modern architectural wonders.

Beyond the urban landscape, our adventure took us deep into the natural splendor of Basque Country. We embarked on a captivating hike through the Urdaibai Reserve, a pristine ecological heritage area recognized as one of Spain’s most beautiful and important natural spaces. This biosphere reserve is a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, particularly migratory birds, offering stunning vistas and a sense of tranquility. Our journey continued to the famous Oma Forest, an artistic masterpiece created by Agustín Ibarrola, where painted trees create a mesmerizing, interactive experience within nature. And no trip to the Basque Coast would be complete without a visit to the dramatic peninsula of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, famously known as Dragonstone from Game of Thrones. The winding stone staircase leading to the hermitage, perched atop a conical islet, offers panoramic views of the rugged Bay of Biscay and a truly mystical atmosphere.

Our culinary exploration was equally memorable. We indulged in traditional local cuisine at charming restaurants in smaller towns like Kortezubi and Plentzia. At Lezika in Kortezubi, the steak was unbelievably tender, the turbot cheeks a delicate revelation, and the hearty beans with black pudding a true taste of regional comfort food. In Plentzia, Las Palamas served up another fantastic steak, perfectly crisp frites, and blistered peppers that burst with flavor. These dining experiences offered an authentic glimpse into the rich gastronomic heritage of the Basque region, proving that incredible food extends far beyond Bilbao’s city limits.
