During my visit, my cousin and I embarked on an extensive walking tour, covering significant ground. We began our journey at the majestic Senate Square, a historical heart of Helsinki, before meandering down the elegant Esplanadi park towards the lively Market Square. To gain admission, visitors descend a series of steps into a long hallway, where a small fee secures a visitor’s sticker. As you proceed further into the church, a profound sense of scale emerges: it is vastly larger than its exterior suggests, with much of the structure ingeniously carved into and built beneath the earth’s surface.
The church’s genesis dates back to 1930, with an initial, radically different design envisioned for this serene Helsinki locale. However, the outbreak of World War II brought construction to an abrupt halt as the Nazi army advanced. When work resumed and finally concluded in 1969, the plans had undergone a dramatic transformation. The result was the iconic copper-domed structure that now emerges gracefully from an underground rock formation, an enduring symbol of Finnish architectural innovation.
The interior, with its striking copper ceiling, evokes a sense of grandeur and a subtle nod to Finland’s historical ties and proximity to former Soviet influences, reminiscent of structures like Buzludzha in Bulgaria. After exploring the interior, I recommend venturing around to the backside of the church. Here, you can carefully climb the rocks – be mindful as the elevation is surprisingly significant from this vantage, and the surfaces can be quite slippery – to enjoy a splendid view of the tranquil neighborhood below.

Helsinki’s Old Market Hall, situated by the picturesque harbor, is far more than just a place to shop; it’s a vibrant destination in its own right. This historic indoor market is a treasure trove of exquisite, fresh, and utterly delicious finds that could easily occupy a full day, or even an entire week, of culinary exploration. Unlike some outdoor markets, like the nearby Market Square, the Old Market Hall offers the delightful advantage of being entirely enclosed. This means that even if an unexpected snowfall descends in May, as it did during my visit, you can browse and savor in complete comfort, staying perfectly dry and warm.
Within its charming walls, the market offers an incredible array of local delicacies. Reindeer meat, a Finnish staple, is available in almost every conceivable form – from savory sausages and expertly smoked cuts to rich pâté and traditional jerky, alongside countless other intriguing snacks.
Among the many fascinating discoveries were canned elk and reindeer pâté. I was momentarily tempted to bring some back for my children, envisioning a playful tale of what happens when Rudolph gets too sassy with Santa. However, after a memorable encounter with a food-sniffing dog at customs on a previous trip (which involved the embarrassing rediscovery of a forgotten frankfurter in my carry-on 10 hours and a continent later), I wisely decided against attempting to explain canned reindeer pâté to customs officers. Some adventures are best left in the memory!
My time spent browsing the vibrant seafood stalls was an absolute delight. The displays of fresh catches, adorned with an abundance of gorgeous colors and varied textures, were incredibly inviting. Simply wandering through the city streets revealed countless shops where one could easily spend a fortune, given enough time. There are exquisite boutiques showcasing immaculate Finnish design, from minimalist aesthetics to bold, functional pieces. Scattered throughout are fun and funky flea markets and consignment stores, brimming with impossibly cool and unique treasures waiting to be discovered. Additionally, Helsinki is home to a plethora of shops dedicated to impeccable Finnish interior design, offering inspiration and covetable items for every home.
I was particularly smitten by a small artisan market we stumbled upon, where I could have, quite literally, purchased everything in sight. The same goes for the numerous home decor shops we popped into, each offering a distinct selection of beautifully crafted goods.

Revisiting the Old Market Hall for its gastronomic offerings was undoubtedly one of my favorite aspects of visiting Helsinki. I could have happily spent an entire week sampling every delectable item within its historic walls.
Everywhere you look, salmon reigns supreme. The market abounds with various forms of this beloved fish: cured, smoked, dried, and fresh. You’ll find it artfully arranged on toast, showcased in refrigerated cases, prepared as a creamy spread, or even offered fresh and raw directly from the fishmonger. There is no mistaking Finland’s deep-seated culinary obsession—salmon is unequivocally king here!
Beyond the omnipresent salmon, the market offers a myriad of other delightful Finnish treats to discover. These range from hearty sausages and savory reindeer dishes to the sweet tang of cloudberries, a variety of fragrant teas, and artisanal coffees. And, without exaggeration, the selection of breads and pastries is among the most delicious I have ever encountered. Many market stalls are also outfitted with comfortable tables and chairs, providing a perfect setting for a quick, casual, yet incredibly satisfying meal right amidst the bustling atmosphere.

At the heart of the Old Market Hall, you’ll find a prominent dining area dedicated to Story, the hall’s anchor cafe and bakery. Story boasts two locations across Helsinki, but my experience at their wonderfully delicious stand within the Old Market Hall was truly memorable.
Story offers a comprehensive menu, including a full bar, expertly prepared espresso and coffee, an array of fresh sandwiches, and some of the most extraordinary pastries I sampled throughout my entire Scandinavian journey. My cousin and I decided to indulge in lattes; I must emphasize that, compared to much of Western Europe, Scandinavian countries truly excel in their coffee craftsmanship! As a self-proclaimed coffee snob, I was utterly thrilled with every cup of Scandinavian coffee I enjoyed. It avoids the over-roasted bitterness often found at chains like Starbucks, and the comparative weakness of Irish, British, or German coffee.
Accompanying our perfect lattes, we savored a delightful cinnamon apple bun, a light and airy Brita cake, and a classic cinnamon roll. I have to confess, I am now absolutely, thoroughly, and completely enamored with Brita cakes – so much so that I’m actively sifting through recipes, eager to recreate this exquisite dessert soon!
Story’s cinnamon roll was a revelation, particularly with its toasted almonds and a subtly sweet caramel sauce. It offered a wonderful, buttery crunch that was both satisfying and not overly cloying, its rich, buttery quality perfectly balancing the sweetness of the caramel.

As my cousin and I were making our way back towards the Old Market, intending to grab a fresh seafood lunch, we serendipitously passed by Kappeli – an incredibly charming restaurant gracefully situated alongside the picturesque Esplanadi. A quick glance at the menu outside revealed an enticing asparagus tasting menu. White asparagus is a personal favorite, and its seasonal appearance across Europe in spring is legendary! I had been secretly hoping Finland’s late spring would present us with this delicacy, so discovering it at Kappeli was an absolute must-do.
The tasting experience commenced with an intriguing Asparagus Gin and Tonic – quite possibly the best cocktail I have ever tasted, a truly swoon-worthy start! The menu then unfolded through a series of delectable Finnish dishes, each one a testament to the country’s rich culinary traditions. We left feeling utterly satisfied, so gloriously stuffed that any thoughts of returning to the market hall before our ship departed for Sweden vanished entirely.
My cousin Alicia, a devoted fan of dill, was particularly delighted by a pot roast dish featuring a rich, creamy dill sauce. The asparagus was ingeniously incorporated into both the sauce and the flavorful bed of chickpeas.
We were absolutely captivated by the seafood and asparagus soup; it was so exquisitely delicious, we could have metaphorically bathed in it! The soup offered a delicate sweetness, a rich and earthy flavor profile, and was generously studded with succulent chunks of fresh langoustine.

The only instance where we needed cash was for the bus ride from the ship into the city center. This particular bus ride could have been pre-reserved as a shore excursion through the cruise line, but thankfully, cruise staff were on hand selling tickets as we disembarked. It’s always a good idea to have a small amount of local currency on hand for minor purchases or unexpected situations, but credit cards will serve you well for the most part.
Smooth Disembarkation from Your Cruise
Upon arrival in Helsinki, our initial plan was to walk directly from the ship into town. However, due to significant construction happening at the time of our visit, the cruise staff advised opting for a bus transfer. This bus conveniently drops passengers right in the city center, saving a potentially convoluted walk.
It’s worth noting that smaller cruise ships often dock directly in the heart of the city, specifically in the South Beach area. However, larger vessels like the Regal Princess typically dock a little further south, in a newer, glittering neighborhood characterized by numerous attractive condos under construction. While this area is safe and clean, walking to the city center, though not more than a mile, would have involved a somewhat awkward route because of the ongoing construction. The bus proved to be an incredibly easy alternative. As mentioned, tickets could be purchased with cash on the spot, or pre-booked via the ship’s shore excursion desk, which is advisable for smoother planning. For those who prefer direct transport, plenty of taxis were also readily available by the ship.

Helsinki is an incredibly pedestrian-friendly city, making walking an excellent way to explore. While there are some gentle hills, we encountered no difficulties traversing the city entirely on foot, taking in all the sights at our own pace. Taxis are readily available, and the city boasts an extensive and reliable cable car (tram) system, making public transportation a breeze.
