The Allure of Easy French Dip Sandwiches

What Exactly is a French Dip Sandwich?

If you’re new to the world of French Dip, you might be wondering about the magic behind this iconic sandwich. At its core, a French Dip sandwich is a celebration of beef and flavor, featuring thinly sliced roast beef, a crusty French-style roll, and a rich, savory dipping sauce known as “au jus.” This particular recipe elevates the classic by utilizing tender ribeye steaks, promising a melt-in-your-mouth experience and an explosion of flavor that will leave you craving more. It’s more than just a sandwich; it’s a culinary experience where every bite, saturated with the aromatic au jus, delivers a comforting warmth and profound satisfaction.

The “French” in French Dip: An American Classic

Despite its name, the French Dip sandwich is not actually French at all! Its origins are firmly rooted in early 20th-century Los Angeles, California. The culinary legends Philippe The Original and Cole’s P.E. Buffet both lay claim to inventing this beloved sandwich. While the exact history is debated, both establishments offer compelling tales involving French bread and their delicious beef broth. The “French” likely refers to the type of bread traditionally used or the beef consommé-like dipping sauce, not the country of origin. Regardless of its true genesis, the French Dip has become a cherished American classic, renowned for its rich flavors and comforting appeal, making it a staple on menus across the nation.

Selecting the Perfect Beef for Your French Dip

While many French Dip recipes traditionally call for classic roast beef, our version takes the flavor profile to an exceptional level by using hot, oven-roasted ribeye steaks. Ribeye, known for its rich marbling and incredible tenderness, ensures every bite of your sandwich is unbelievably succulent and flavorful. While it might be a slightly more premium choice than standard roast beef, the unparalleled taste and ease of preparation make it an investment truly worth it. You’ll be astonished at how quickly and effortlessly these gourmet-quality sandwiches come together.

I’ve experimented with various cuts over the years, including traditional beef roast, chuck roast, and thinly sliced deli roast beef. However, after extensive testing, ribeye steaks emerged as the undisputed favorite. Their inherent tenderness and rich, beefy flavor are perfectly complemented by the savory au jus, creating a sandwich experience that is simply unmatched. For the best results, aim for a medium-rare to medium doneness for your ribeye, ensuring maximum juiciness before thinly slicing. This allows the beef to remain tender and flavorful when enveloped by the warm au jus and toasted bread.

Mastering the Art of French Dip Au Jus

What Is Au Jus and Why It’s Essential

The “dip” in French Dip isn’t just an accessory; it’s the heart and soul of the sandwich. Au jus is a flavorful, thin gravy or sauce typically made from the pan drippings of roasted meat. In the context of a French Dip, it’s a rich, salty, and incredibly savory broth that transforms a simple beef sandwich into an extraordinary culinary delight. A good au jus provides moisture, intensifies the beefy flavor, and creates that irresistible dipping experience that defines the French Dip. Many easy au jus recipes incorporate ingredients like soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, garlic, and sometimes even a touch of sweetness from sugar, along with aromatics like onions and carrots, to build a complex and deeply satisfying flavor profile, ideal for soaking into crusty bread.

Creating a truly exceptional au jus is crucial for an outstanding French Dip sandwich, and fortunately, it’s remarkably straightforward with this recipe. Our method focuses on building layers of flavor using natural pan drippings and a few key aromatics and liquids. The best part? This savory sauce comes together effortlessly while your perfectly roasted steaks are resting, allowing for seamless timing and a stress-free cooking experience. The rich drippings from your ribeye steaks form the foundation, ensuring a robust and authentic beef flavor in every drop.

To Make Easy French Dip Au Jus, You’ll Need:

1/4 yellow onion, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tsp. minced fresh thyme
1 1/2 c. low-sodium beef broth
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

How To Make Easy French Dip Au Jus:

Start by adding the flavorful drippings from your roasted steaks into a medium-sized saucepan. This is where the magic begins, as these drippings provide the concentrated beef flavor that forms the backbone of your au jus.

Next, add your thinly sliced yellow onion to the saucepan. Sauté the onion gently until it becomes soft and translucent, typically taking about 3-5 minutes. This process sweetens the onion and allows its aromatic compounds to release into the drippings.

Stir in the minced garlic and fresh thyme. Continue to cook for another 1-3 minutes, just until the garlic becomes fragrant and lightly golden. Be careful not to burn the garlic, as this can impart a bitter taste.

Pour in the low-sodium beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. The Worcestershire sauce adds a crucial layer of umami and depth, complementing the beef broth perfectly.

Allow the au jus to simmer uncovered for about 8 minutes, or until it has slightly thickened and the flavors have melded beautifully. You’re looking for a thin, flavorful sauce, not a thick gravy. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Choosing the Ideal Bread for Dipping

The bread is more than just a vessel for your French Dip; it’s a critical component that contributes to the overall texture and enjoyment of the sandwich. Traditionally, a crusty French bread loaf is the go-to choice, offering a perfect balance of a firm exterior that holds up to dipping and a soft, airy interior to absorb the flavorful au jus. However, don’t feel limited to tradition!

Many other types of bread can work wonderfully. I often enjoy using sturdy hoagie rolls. The key is to select a bread that has some structural integrity. If you opt for softer rolls, ensure you toast them thoroughly. A well-toasted roll creates a barrier that prevents the bread from becoming overly soggy and falling apart too quickly when dipped. This light crispness also adds a delightful textural contrast to the tender beef and rich sauce, enhancing every bite.

Perfect Pairings: What To Serve With French Dip Sandwiches

Recipe FAQs

How long does French Dip keep?

This recipe, including the cooked beef and au jus, can be stored separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to four days. For best quality, store the beef and au jus separately and combine when reheating.

Can you eat French Dip while pregnant?

This is a common and valid concern! Some French Dip recipes feature cold, thinly sliced meat that is often cooked to medium-rare, which can pose a listeria risk for expectant mothers. However, in this particular recipe, we’re using fully cooked ribeye beef that is served hot, and the au jus is also heated. This preparation makes it completely safe to enjoy if you’re expecting.

Can I prepare components of the French Dip ahead of time?

Absolutely! The au jus can be made a day or two in advance and stored in the refrigerator. Reheat gently on the stovetop before serving. You can also roast and slice the ribeye a day ahead, keeping it covered in the fridge. Gently warm the beef slices in some of the au jus to prevent drying out before assembling the sandwiches.

What kind of cheese works best on a French Dip?

Provolone is the traditional and highly recommended cheese for French Dip sandwiches due to its mild flavor and excellent melting properties. It creates a gooey, savory layer that complements the beef and au jus beautifully. Other great options include Swiss cheese, for a nuttier flavor, or Monterey Jack, which also melts incredibly well.

How do I reheat leftover French Dip sandwiches?

To reheat, it’s best to store the beef and au jus separately from the bread. Gently warm the beef slices in a small amount of au jus in a saucepan until heated through. Reheat the au jus separately. Toast fresh bread or lightly toast the original bread rolls if they were stored separately. Assemble the sandwich with warm beef and cheese, then toast briefly to melt the cheese before serving with hot au jus.

  • Rub herbs, salt, and pepper all over ribeyes.
  • Roast ribeye steaks for 20 minutes – or until a meat thermometer registers 125 degrees Fahrenheit for medium-rare.
  • Let steaks rest on a cutting board, set aside. Do not tent with foil, as this can steam the meat.

  • Add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce and bring the mixture to a simmer.
  • Cook au jus until slightly thickened and flavors have melded, about 8 minutes.
  • When au jus is made, slice the rested beef very thinly against the grain.
  • Divide the thinly sliced beef and provolone slices evenly among the French bread or hoagie rolls.
