Stock Hill’s sleek decor, characterized by warm woods, plush seating, and soaring ceilings, creates a cozy yet incredibly sophisticated ambiance – perfect for a special night out. Despite its romantic setting, I found dining solo at Stock Hill to be a surprisingly comfortable and enjoyable experience. The attentive waiters and friendly bar staff were engaging and happy to chat, and the spacious, open layout provided ample opportunity for discreet people-watching. The atmosphere felt neither stuffy nor exclusively for couples, which is a rare and welcome quality when seeking a delicious and memorable meal while traveling alone.

I began my meal with the rock shrimp, a delightful appetizer featuring perfectly breaded shrimp with a delectable sweet and spicy kick. Served in crisp, cool lettuce cups, it was an ideal way to awaken the palate. Even as a solo diner, I found myself thoroughly enjoying this flavorful start, almost wondering how I’d make room for the main event!

The true stars at Stock Hill are, of course, the steaks. Each cut is incredibly fresh, juicy, and cooked precisely to order, reflecting the restaurant’s commitment to quality. While the menu offers a plethora of tempting side dishes, I opted for the classic pairing of a succulent filet with rich, buttery mushrooms. Although I was quite full, the mushrooms were heavenly – perfectly meaty and saturated with flavor, complementing my steak beautifully. I even saved some to enjoy for breakfast the next morning!

Beignet – in River Market

Tucked away in Kansas City’s bustling River Market, a vibrant hub of local farmers, fresh produce, and unique goods, you’ll find Beignet. This small, often-packed, and utterly delicious walk-up eatery brings the soulful flavors of New Orleans to the heart of the Midwest.

While Beignet offers a variety of New Orleans-inspired classics, the undeniable star of the menu, and the eatery’s namesake, is its signature beignets! These fluffy, square-shaped doughnuts dusted generously with powdered sugar are a heavenly treat.

I indulged in “The Pig” beignet, a savory masterpiece filled with gooey melted cheese and crispy bacon. Each bite was an unbelievably rich and satisfying experience, leaving me feeling utterly content. In fact, it was so good, I still regret not ordering a second one on the spot! Beignet is a perfect stop for a quick, indulgent snack while exploring the lively River Market.

Dinner at Novel – In Crossroads Arts District

Novel, located in the trendsetting Crossroads Arts District, embodies everything one hopes for in a neighborhood restaurant: it’s impossibly cool, aesthetically gorgeous, and boasts an innovative cocktail list and menu. With its inviting and fun vibe, it’s the perfect setting to linger all night with friends, enjoying conversation over expertly crafted drinks and an array of delectable small plates designed for sharing.

Despite typically disliking dining alone, I found myself completely at ease at Novel’s bar. The bartenders were not only skillful mixologists but also engaging and chatty, making my evening thoroughly entertaining. The restaurant’s atmosphere felt incredibly welcoming, far from an exclusive “couples-only” spot, which is a crucial detail for anyone traveling solo and seeking a truly enjoyable and memorable meal.

One of the bartenders insisted I try the pork toast, a dish I immediately loved. Featuring lightly battered smoked pork beautifully topped with a creamy avocado flower, it was so exquisitely delicious that I seriously considered ordering a second. My husband, a fan of bold flavors, would undoubtedly adore this dish – I can’t wait to bring him back to Kansas City to experience it this fall!

As a huge fan of mocktails, I was particularly impressed by Novel’s agua frescas – vibrant, fruit-infused waters that provided a refreshing and delicious pairing for my meal.

Another standout was the sweetbread tagliatelle. This dish was on an entirely different level: fresh, handmade pasta coated in a luxurious, creamy sauce, complemented by the rich and delicate flavor of sweetbreads. It was so perfectly balanced and delicious that I could honestly eat it every night.

With its expansive patio, quirky interior, and an impressive list of delicious beers and expertly crafted cocktails, it’s the ideal spot for happy hour drinks with friends or a lively Saturday afternoon outing.

While Brewery Emperial is, as its name suggests, a brewery, don’t underestimate their cocktail program. They offer a large and unique selection of handcrafted beverages, alongside a phenomenal range of spirits. The brewery’s fun and welcoming atmosphere is perfectly set up for enjoying a relaxed afternoon with friends. And while I didn’t get the chance to sample their food, I’ve heard their pub classics are absolutely knockout dishes, making this a definite must-visit for any weekend itinerary!

It’s a sweet treat you are guaranteed never to forget.

A single visit to Thou Mayest will undoubtedly convert you into a believer in the bean-roasting prowess of this often-called “Paris of the Plains.”

Thou Mayest boasts a distinctive interior, blending funky and kitschy decor within an industrial space. It’s like a downtown warehouse had a delightful collision with a National Lampoon’s Family Vacation set. You’ll find charming vintage Midwestern touches everywhere, from old maps and fishing poles to nostalgic camp badges and other cozy elements, all cleverly juxtaposed with modern, wiry geometric lighting and sleek metal barstools, creating a truly unique and inviting atmosphere.

During a hot summer afternoon visit, a traditional pour-over was out of the question for me, but the intoxicating aroma of their freshly roasted beans was undeniable.
