At Ajpal, I add lots of tips in all of my recipes – because I am a home cook without any formal training, and I find I am more confident making dishes when I understand why it works, and what each ingredient means to the flavor of a recipe. My goal is for even the most beginner home cook to feel empowered in the kitchen.

Vegan Cheesesteaks on Hoagies

When I am trying to add a few more nutritional meals into my week or following our church’s fasting schedule (I am Orthodox Christian, and we fast from meat and animal products regularly around the calendar, especially during Lent), I look for delicious, comforting and “meaty” meal ideas that are full of flavor.

Vegan Philly Cheese Steak Ingredients

First assemble the following ingredients:

  • Olive oil (1 tbsp) – Heat in a hot skillet to lightly sear proteins and vegetables for flavor.
  • Large onion (1) – Slice into thin strips; cook until caramelized to provide sweetness and depth.
  • Large bell pepper (1) – Thinly slice; sauté until tender and blistered for color and crunch.
  • Portobello mushroom caps (2) – Clean and thinly slice the caps to mimic steak texture and mushroom umami.
  • Shiitake mushrooms (8 oz) – Trim stems, slice caps, and sauté until browned to boost savoriness.
  • Banana peppers (1 cup) – Slice and add for bright, tangy heat that contrasts the rich filling.
  • Hoagie rolls (2) – Split and toast the inside to reinforce crust and prevent sogginess.
  • Montreal steak seasoning (1 ½ tbsp) – Sprinkle generously on the veggie-protein mix to layer savory, herby notes.
  • Veganaise (optional) – Use as a light spread on the roll or whisk into a quick sauce for creaminess.
  • Vegan Cheese(2 cups, I use Good Planet vegan Mozzarella) – Layer or melt over the filling to achieve ooey-gooey cheesesteak vibes.

Steps to Make Vegan Mushroom Cheese Steaks

Once you have assembled the ingredients, use this method.

Cook Veggies. In a large, heavy skillet, heat oil. Add onions and peppers, sautee on medium high, stirring often to prevent burning, until lightly browned (about 8 minutes).

Add Mushrooms. Add shiitakes and portobellos, continue cooking until mushrooms are browned and softened, another 5-8 minutes.

Assemble. When vegetables are softened and nicely browned, add montreal steak seasoning. Mix well.

Broil. Place on toasted hoagie rolls and top with banana peppers and vegan cheese. Place the Philly Cheesesteaks on a baking sheet open with the cheese exposed and broil for 2-3 minutes till cheese it melted. Enjoy!

Tips and Tricks for Making Vegan Philly Cheesesteak

Cheese sauce option: for a creamy finish, blend soaked cashews with nutritional yeast, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and plant milk; heat gently and thicken with a touch of tapioca or cornstarch.

Toasted bread matters: choose sturdy hoagie rolls and toast the insides with a bit of olive oil or vegan butter to form a moisture barrier.

Layering is key: bottom bun ? thin cheese layer (if using slices) ? hot steak and vegetables ? top cheese or sauce; heat from the filling should melt the top layer.

Flavor boosters: vegan Worcestershire, tamari, miso, or a tiny amount of liquid smoke adds depth without a grill.

Finish with brightness: a splash of lemon juice or vinegar at the end brightens the filling.

Optional heat: a pinch of smoked paprika or red pepper flakes for a subtle kick.

Make-ahead tips: prep vegetables in advance; cook and season proteins ahead and reheat quickly; cheese sauce can be made 2–3 days ahead.

Leftovers & storage: store components separately in the fridge; reheat proteins in a hot skillet and re-toast the bread before serving.

Common pitfalls to avoid: overcrowding the pan; soggy bread; under-seasoning; sauce that’s too thick or too thin.
