How to Make Cherry Cheesecake Danish Bars
Crafting these delectable Cherry Danish Cheesecake Bars is surprisingly straightforward, thanks to a few clever shortcuts that ensure maximum flavor with minimal fuss. Before you begin, take a moment to gather all your ingredients. This practice, known as ‘mise en place,’ ensures a smooth and enjoyable baking process, allowing you to focus on the fun of creating something delicious!
Essential Ingredients:
- 2 (8 ounce) cans Refrigerated Crescent Roll Dough Sheets: These ready-to-use dough sheets are the secret to the incredibly flaky and buttery base and top layers of your danish bars. They provide a tender, golden pastry without the need for intricate dough preparation, saving you significant time and effort.
- 16 ounces whipped cream cheese: The heart of the creamy cheesecake filling! Whipped cream cheese is ideal for this recipe because its light, airy texture makes it easier to mix into a smooth, lump-free filling. It provides that signature rich, tangy, and irresistibly creamy cheesecake experience that contrasts beautifully with the fruit.
- 1 cup granulated sugar: This essential sweetener balances the tanginess of the cream cheese and enhances the natural sweetness of the cherries, creating a perfectly harmonious flavor profile for your cheesecake layer.
- 2 large eggs: Acting as a crucial binding agent, the eggs give the cheesecake filling its structure and help it set beautifully as it bakes. They contribute to the smooth, custardy texture that is characteristic of a well-made cheesecake.
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract: A staple in most baked goods, vanilla extract deepens and enriches the overall flavor of the cheesecake filling. Its warm, aromatic notes complement both the cream cheese and the cherries, adding a layer of subtle complexity.
- 1 cup cherry pie filling: This vibrant, ready-to-use filling delivers a burst of sweet and tart cherry flavor. It creates a striking visual layer and provides a refreshing counterpoint to the rich cheesecake, making each bite an exciting blend of tastes.
- 1 large egg white: This is a simple yet effective ingredient for the pastry top. When brushed over the crescent roll sheet before baking, the egg white creates a beautiful, shiny, golden-brown crust, adding to the visual appeal and slightly crisp texture of the finished bars.
- Icing, optional topping: A sweet drizzle of icing adds an extra touch of indulgence and visual elegance to your bars. A simple powdered sugar glaze can enhance their dessert-like quality.
- Powdered sugar, optional topping: A light dusting of powdered sugar is a classic finishing touch that instantly elevates the presentation of these bars. It adds a delicate sweetness and a professional, bakery-fresh look.

Once you’ve gathered all your ingredients, the baking process itself is wonderfully straightforward. Follow these simple steps for perfect Cherry Danish Cheesecake Bars every time:
- Prep Like a Pro. Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F (175°C). Then, line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper. This simple step is a game-changer for easy removal and clean-up. Carefully unroll one of the refrigerated crescent roll dough sheets and gently press it into the bottom of the prepared pan, stretching it slightly to fit the corners and edges. This forms the delicious base of your danish.
- Whip Up the Filling. In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine the whipped cream cheese, granulated sugar, the two large eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat these ingredients together on medium speed until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy, with no lumps. This ensures a silky, decadent cheesecake layer.
- Layer the Flavors. Pour the smooth cream cheese mixture evenly over the crescent roll dough in the pan. Next, spoon the cherry pie filling in dollops over the cream cheese layer. You can gently spread it or leave it in distinct dollops for a marbled effect. Unroll the second crescent roll sheet and carefully place it over the cherry and cream cheese layers. For that perfect golden sheen, lightly whisk the remaining large egg white and brush it generously over the top pastry layer.
- Bake to Golden Perfection. Place your assembled danish bars in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes. You’re looking for a beautiful golden-brown and puffy top crust. The center of the danish should have a slight jiggle when you gently move the pan, indicating that the cheesecake filling is set but still wonderfully creamy.
- Cool and Serve. Patience is key here! Allow the danish bars to cool completely at room temperature for at least 2 hours. This cooling time is essential for the cheesecake to firm up and for the flavors to meld beautifully. Once cooled, you can easily lift the entire danish out of the pan using the parchment paper. Slice into individual bars and, if desired, drizzle with icing or dust with powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness and elegance. Serve plain for a simple delight!

Tips and Tricks To Perfect Cheesecake Danish Bars
Achieving bakery-quality Cherry Danish Cheesecake Bars at home is easier than you think! With a few simple tips and tricks, you can elevate this already fantastic recipe to new heights. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or just starting out, these insights will help ensure your bars are perfectly flaky, creamy, and utterly delicious every single time.
- Master Your Pan Prep. While these bars can technically be baked directly in a greased pan, I highly recommend using parchment paper. Not only does it make cleanup a breeze, but it also allows you to easily lift the entire baked danish out of the pan. This makes slicing into neat, professional-looking bars incredibly simple and prevents any sticking. If you do opt to grease the pan, ensure you grease thoroughly, paying attention to the corners.
- Customize the Creaminess: Adjusting the Egg. The number of eggs used in the cheesecake filling can subtly alter its texture. This recipe calls for two large eggs, which creates a filling that’s wonderfully rich and firm, reminiscent of a classic cheese danish. If you prefer a slightly lighter, more “cheesecake-like” consistency that’s a bit softer and less eggy, feel free to reduce the eggs to just one. Experiment to find your perfect balance!
- Flavor Adventure: Alternate Fillings. While cherry pie filling is a timeless classic, these bars are incredibly adaptable! Feel free to explore other canned pie filling flavors to create unique variations. Some fantastic ideas include:
- Peach pie filling: For a taste of summer, offering a sweet and mellow fruit flavor.
- Strawberry rhubarb pie filling: A delightful balance of sweet and tart, perfect for a spring treat.
- Apple cinnamon pie filling: A cozy, comforting choice that’s wonderful for autumn or any time of year.
- Boysenberry pie filling: For a unique, rich berry flavor with a hint of tartness.
- Blueberry pie filling: A classic, vibrant berry option that’s always a crowd-pleaser.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also use a homemade fruit filling. Just be sure it has a thick, jam-like consistency.
- Fresh Fruit Filling Caution. If you choose to use fresh fruit for your filling instead of canned, be mindful of its moisture content. Fresh fruit can release a lot of liquid as it bakes, potentially making your pastry soggy. To prevent this, gently cook your fresh fruit on the stovetop with a little sugar and cornstarch until it thickens slightly, reducing any excess liquid. This ensures your pastry stays flaky and your cheesecake layer remains firm.
- Alternative Toppings for Extra Zing. Beyond the classic icing or powdered sugar, there are many ways to finish your danish bars. For a lovely crunchy texture and sparkling appearance, sprinkle granulated sugar over the top of the danish after applying the egg wash and before baking. This creates a beautiful caramelized crust. You can also channel our apple cheesecake sopapilla bars recipe and create a cinnamon-sugar topping. Or for a truly decadent finish, try drizzling warm caramel sauce or chocolate syrup over the cooled bars. A dollop of whipped cream on each slice before serving also adds a touch of elegance.
- Room Temperature Ingredients are Key. For the creamiest cheesecake filling, ensure your whipped cream cheese and eggs are at room temperature. This allows them to blend together smoothly and evenly, preventing lumps and ensuring a consistently rich texture.
- Don’t Overmix. While you want your cream cheese mixture smooth, avoid overmixing once the eggs are added. Overmixing can incorporate too much air, leading to cracks in the cheesecake as it cools. Mix just until combined and smooth.
- Cool Completely. This is perhaps the most important tip! Resist the urge to slice into your bars too soon. Allowing them to cool completely at room temperature, as instructed, gives the cheesecake filling time to set properly. This prevents a messy, gooey center and ensures clean, beautiful slices.
Recipe FAQ’S
Absolutely! These cherry cheesecake danish bars are an excellent make-ahead dessert. You can prepare them entirely in advance and store them, covered, in the refrigerator overnight. This makes them perfect for entertaining or busy mornings, as they’re ready to slice and serve when you are.
When stored properly in an airtight container in the refrigerator, these cheesecake bars will remain safe to eat for up to four days. However, for the best possible flavor and texture, we highly recommend enjoying them within two days of baking. The pastry is at its flakiest and the filling at its creamiest during this time.

What to Serve With Cherry Cheesecake Danish Bars
These Cherry Danish Cheesecake Bars are incredibly versatile and can be enjoyed in a multitude of ways, making them perfect for almost any occasion. Whether you’re serving them for a casual family meal or an elegant brunch, here are some delightful suggestions to complement their rich, fruity, and creamy flavors:
- Perfect Pairings: Beverages. The sweetness and richness of these bars make them an ideal companion to various drinks. A classic cup of hot coffee or a steaming mug of tea provides a wonderful contrast, helping to cut through the dessert’s richness. For coffee lovers, consider a robust black coffee, a creamy latte, or even an iced coffee during warmer months. Herbal teas or a simple black tea with a splash of milk would also be delightful. For a refreshing non-caffeinated option, serve with a glass of cold milk or a sparkling fruit-infused water.
- Elevate with Creaminess: Ice Cream or Whipped Cream. To truly transform these bars into a decadent dessert experience, pair them with a scoop of premium vanilla bean ice cream. The cold, smooth ice cream creates a delightful temperature and texture contrast against the baked bars. Alternatively, a generous dollop of freshly whipped cream can add a cloud-like lightness and extra touch of creamy indulgence. A dairy-free vanilla ice cream or coconut whipped cream can also be fantastic options for those with dietary restrictions.
- Freshness Factor: Complementary Fruit. Enhance the vibrant cherry flavor by serving these bars alongside a medley of fresh fruit. Berries like juicy strawberries, tart raspberries, or even more fresh cherries would beautifully complement the existing flavors. A light fruit salad, perhaps with a hint of mint, can add a refreshing counterpoint and a burst of natural sweetness.
- Drizzle Away: Indulgent Sauces. For an extra layer of flavor and sophistication, consider drizzling your bars with a complementary sauce. A rich chocolate sauce, a tangy raspberry coulis, or even a homemade cherry sauce can add depth and an elegant finish. A warm caramel sauce would also be a luxurious addition, especially when serving these as a dessert.
- Part of a Grand Finale: After a Light Meal. Given their satisfying richness, these bars shine brightest when served as the grand finale to a lighter main course. Think of a crisp salad with grilled chicken, a simple roasted fish, or a delicate pasta dish. They are also phenomenal following our Baked Pork Tenderloin or our incredibly popular Smash Burgers, offering a sweet, comforting close to a savory meal. Their versatility ensures they’ll be a welcome treat, no matter the preceding dishes.
- Brunch Bliss: The Morning After. Beyond dessert, these bars are an absolute star at any brunch table. Serve them alongside savory quiches, fluffy scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and a selection of fresh juices for a truly memorable spread. Their rich flavor and delightful texture make them a standout centerpiece.
