Discover Hondarribia: A Basque Gem

For our milestone ten-year anniversary, my husband and I sought an authentic experience in the captivating Basque region of Spain. With a conference planned later that week in San Sebastian, we decided to explore a nearby town, yearning for a true local immersion. All the residents we spoke with unanimously recommended Hondarribia, and they were absolutely right! This charming coastal gem, often overlooked by larger crowds, offered everything we dreamed of and more.

Our visit to Hondarribia unfolded on a glorious late May day, with clear skies and temperatures nearing a perfect 80 degrees Fahrenheit – ideal weather for exploring its winding streets and breathtaking coastline. We began our journey in the enchanting Old Town, a pedestrian-only haven brimming with unique shops and inviting local pintxos bars. The city’s colorful houses, adorned with vibrant flower boxes, created a picturesque setting at every turn. We ascended to the historic Castle of Charles V, located near the grand St. Maria Gate, which greeted us with an elegant stone fountain. The castle area itself felt like a miniature city, housing more shops, charming hotels, residences, and a magnificent medieval cathedral. From the cathedral’s vantage point, the panoramic views were simply unbelievable. We gazed upon a tapestry of red-tiled roofs and ancient stone streets, stretching out to the sparkling blue bay that met the vast Atlantic. To our right, lush green mountains, punctuated by dramatic rock faces, completed this stunning landscape. It was truly gorgeous and an indelible memory.

For lunch, we indulged in a quintessential Basque culinary experience at Taberna & Bistro La Perla. This local favorite offered only a chef’s tasting menu, with or without wine pairings. Opting for the full experience, we savored course after course of incredibly fresh seafood, perfectly complemented by local txakoli red and white wines. My husband delighted in the perfectly flaky tuna, while I relished the cod, both lightly seasoned to perfection. For dessert, I couldn’t resist trying the local specialty – rice pudding. To my surprise, it had a delicate hint of what tasted like peach liqueur, transforming my opinion of rice pudding entirely!

Following our leisurely lunch, the city entered its traditional siesta period, with most shops and restaurants closing from 2 PM until 5 PM. Rather than retreating to our hotel, my husband and I seized the opportunity for a unique cross-border adventure. We took a short, picturesque ferry ride from the quaint Hondarribia port across to Hendaye, its charming French neighbor. We strolled along Hendaye’s crescent-shaped, rock-faced beach for a while, enjoying the change of scenery, before returning to the Spanish side, which, in our opinion, offered a touch more charm and vibrancy.

With restaurants typically not opening for dinner until 8 PM, we took advantage of the interim hours to explore some delightful local pastry shops, savoring sweet treats. As evening approached, we hailed a taxi for a scenic drive up to the Hermitage of Guadalupe. This historic site offered an incredible 180-degree panoramic vista of the city, mountains, and the expansive ocean, all framed by a serene medieval chapel. It was a moment of tranquility and breathtaking beauty.

Our adventure continued with a picturesque drive along the scenic mountain ridge connecting Hondarribia and San Juan. We then walked the ancient stone streets of San Juan, a captivating fishing village seemingly carved into the side of a dramatic rock face. It felt like stepping back in time, with its unique architecture and tranquil harbor.

While this trip also included visits to the bustling cities of Madrid and San Sebastian, both undeniably beautiful in their own right, it was Hondarribia that truly captured my heart. Its authentic character, stunning scenery, and welcoming atmosphere left an indelible impression.

A key aspect of our authentic experience was the genuine local interaction. English speakers were not abundant, making Google Translate an indispensable companion, but this only deepened our immersion. It felt as though we were truly experiencing the daily life of a community where most people lived and worked, rather than just visiting a tourist facade. I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to this charming medieval town; it’s an experience that promises to be both enriching and memorable.

My Pro Tip

Getting to Hondarribia from Madrid

Traveling to Hondarribia from Madrid is straightforward with a few options to consider. We began our journey by flying from Atlanta to Madrid. Upon arrival, we took a convenient bus from Madrid Airport to the Atocha Train Station, a ride that cost approximately 7 euros per person. We highly recommend booking train tickets from Atocha to Pamplona (a journey of about 2.5 hours) in advance, as they can sell out quickly, especially during peak season. From Pamplona, we opted for a taxi directly to Hondarribia, offering a comfortable and direct transfer. Alternatively, you can rent a car from Pamplona, providing flexibility for exploring the region at your own pace. Another excellent option is to fly into Bilbao Airport, which is closer to the Basque Country. From Bilbao, you can easily rent a car and enjoy a scenic drive to Hondarribia, typically taking around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic.
