However, in recent years, Kansas City, Missouri, has transformed dramatically for the better. Its dynamic evolution makes it a fantastic and surprisingly affordable destination, perfect for a lively girls’ trip, a romantic escape for two, or a fun-filled family vacation.

With so much to see and do, narrowing down the must-visit spots in Kansas City can be challenging. Here, I’ll highlight some of my absolute favorite experiences that promise an exceptional time in the city. Ride the Streetcar from Union Station to City Market

The Kansas City Streetcar offers a convenient and free way to explore many of the city’s most dynamic neighborhoods. It runs from the majestic Union Station, through the vibrant Crossroads Art District and the lively Power and Light District, all the way to the historic City Market. This makes navigating Kansas City’s hotspots incredibly easy, eliminating the hassle of parking.

The streetcar is a relatively new addition to Kansas City’s infrastructure, significantly enhancing connectivity between major downtown areas. With plans for future expansion, it has become an invaluable asset, making it simpler than ever for visitors to experience the city’s unmissable attractions.

Immerse Yourself in History at the National WWI Museum and Memorial

For history enthusiasts, the National WWI Museum and Memorial in Kansas City stands as a profound and essential destination. It offers an unparalleled insight into a pivotal period of our nation’s history, chronicling events both before and after the “war to end all wars.” The memorial itself is a powerful tribute, offering breathtaking views of the city.

Don’t miss the compelling Posters as Propaganda Exhibit, located in the courtyard just across from the tower. This exhibit provides a fascinating look at how wartime posters were used to inform Americans, rally support for the war effort, raise funds for troops, and disseminate information from all sides of the conflict. The intricate frescoes within the exhibit are particularly stunning and are a reason to visit in themselves.

For an unparalleled 360-degree panoramic view of Kansas City, be sure to purchase a ticket and ride the elevator to the top of the monument’s iconic tower. While an elevator provides access for most of the ascent, a short flight of stairs at the very top means the tower is not fully accessible to those with severe mobility impairments.

Despite the height, the top of the tower feels remarkably secure, with a sturdy, narrow walkway and a tall stone ledge. Even for someone who typically experiences a fear of heights, the view from the summit is so captivating that any apprehension quickly fades, leaving you to marvel at the sprawling cityscape below.

Indulge in Kansas City’s Thriving Art Scene

Kansas City might not be the first city that comes to mind for art lovers, but it absolutely should be! Home to world-class art museums boasting countless renowned pieces in their permanent collections, Kansas City’s art institutions are destinations in their own right. The best part? General admission to these incredible museums is often free, making exceptional art accessible to everyone (though donations are highly encouraged to support their fantastic programs).

Visit the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art houses an expansive collection of fine art from across the globe, including significant American and European masterpieces. It proudly displays a substantial number of works by impressionist masters like Monet and Pissarro, which were personal favorites during my college days. I remember spending countless hours in the European art rooms, finding them as peaceful and moving today as they were back then.

After exploring the captivating galleries inside, there’s still much more to discover at the Nelson-Atkins. Stroll through the serene reflecting pools, wander the sculpture walk and meticulously maintained gardens, and, of course, admire the distinctive “Shuttlecock” sculptures that playfully adorn the museum’s sprawling lawn.

Discover Contemporary Art at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art

The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art features stunning permanent exhibits alongside world-class visiting exhibitions from leading contemporary artists. Each year, a compelling new art piece is installed in the entryway, offering a fresh perspective with every visit. On my last visit, the incredible installation by Firelei Báez captivated me. The wall itself was an integral part of the artwork, incorporating organic materials like coffee grounds from the museum’s Cafe Sebastienne into its rich, textured surface. It was a unique piece, making me sad to know it would soon be replaced by the next year’s exciting creation.

Dine in Style at Cafe Sebastienne within the Kemper Museum

Cafe Sebastienne, nestled within the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, offers more than just gorgeous and delicious food. The space itself is a work of art, beautifully decorated with contemporary renditions of classic paintings like the Mona Lisa and Starry Night, creating a truly unique dining ambiance.

With a fresh and inventive menu, Cafe Sebastienne is perfect for a memorable lunch or dinner. Its stunning setting also makes it a popular venue for weddings, parties, and other elegant events.

Navigating Kansas City: Essential Neighborhoods to Explore

While Kansas City boasts over 250 diverse and expansive neighborhoods, for ease of travel and a concentrated experience, I recommend focusing on the Country Club Plaza, Power and Light District, Crossroads Arts District, City/River Market, Crown Center, and Westport areas. These districts offer a rich blend of attractions, dining, and entertainment.

You’ll find numerous excellent hotels in the Plaza area for your stay, while Westport is renowned for its lively bars and legendary BBQ joints. Both are just a short drive from Union Station, where you can conveniently park your car and hop on the streetcar to effortlessly reach other key Kansas City hotspots.

The Iconic Country Club Plaza (and Plaza South)

Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza is undeniably one of its premier tourist destinations. This stunning area is famous for its intricate fountains, distinctive architectural details, chic boutiques, magnificent mansions, and a picturesque riverwalk. Designed by J.C. Nichols as an outdoor shopping mall, its architecture beautifully mimics the grand style of Seville, Spain.

Things to Do at the Plaza: Shopping Extravaganza

Shopping reigns supreme at the Country Club Plaza. The area is a shopper’s paradise, offering a blend of luxury brands and unique local establishments. You can browse high-end retailers like Gucci, Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany & Co., and Michael Kors, or explore popular stores such as Anthropologie, Apple, various bookstores, and athletic apparel shops. The Plaza provides an engaging environment for a leisurely day of retail therapy and discovery.

The Country Club Plaza is a culinary hub, boasting an extensive array of restaurants. From creative, unique dining experiences to beloved and familiar chain establishments, you’ll find no shortage of options. Whether you’re craving a quick bite, a delicious cup of coffee, or an elegant dinner, the Plaza is bursting with delectable choices. Here are just a few of my top recommendations:

Stock Hill: A Premier Steakhouse Experience

Though technically situated in Plaza South, Stock Hill is just a stone’s throw across the river from the main Plaza district. It stands as Kansas City’s quintessential romantic steakhouse, ideal for a truly memorable evening out. As someone who considers myself a steak snob—having been spoiled by the amazing steakhouses in Denver—I can confidently say that Stock Hill’s filet mignon was beyond heavenly. It was cooked perfectly to my preferred Pittsburgh rare: beautifully charred on the outside and perfectly red in the middle.

The rock shrimp appetizer was phenomenal—I could honestly eat it every single day. And for dessert, the banana split (whimsically shaped like a popsicle and adorned with delightful brownie bites) was a fun and charming end to the meal.

Gram & Dun: Patio Perfection and Brunch Delights

Gram & Dun is renowned for having one of Kansas City’s best patios, making it a fantastic spot not only for breakfast and dinner but also a highly sought-after destination for brunch. During my visit, the thick pork belly bacon, exquisitely drizzled with syrup and powdered sugar, along with the fresh Kanpari poke, were absolute standouts for brunch.

The brunch punch is also an absolute must-try—be warned, it’s so delicious you could drink gallons before realizing just how potent it truly is!

River Market: A Hub for People-Watching, Unique Finds, and Fresh Produce

The River Market area, one of Kansas City’s oldest and most vibrant neighborhoods, is a fantastic place to spend a day. It offers a lively atmosphere where you can people-watch, discover unique goods, and shop for fresh, local produce.

Browse the Eclectic Shops

River Market is home to an incredible array of shops. You can find everything from charming trinkets and kitchen gadgets to gourmet food items, bustling farmer’s stalls overflowing with fresh produce, unique tee-shirt shops, and discount clothing. There’s so much to see and do here; it’s the perfect place for a leisurely stroll through stores, followed by sampling some of the delicious food offerings.

Savor New Orleans Flavors at Beignet

Beignet is a New Orleans-style restaurant located within River Market, primarily offering take-out. It specializes in both sweet and savory beignets, as well as other classic Creole dishes. The “Pig Beignet” was absolutely amazing—I’m still dreaming of the gooey cheese and savory bacon bits nestled inside that heavenly soft beignet!

Transportation and Parking at River Market

If you’re heading to River Market, you have a couple of convenient options. You can park directly in and around the City Market and River Market neighborhoods, or you can take the streetcar to its City Market endpoint and enjoy a short walk of a couple of blocks to reach River Market. Additionally, several Kansas City Bikes are available for rent nearby, offering a fun way to explore the area.

There’s ample street parking available, along with a few public lots. There’s also a free lot located at the actual market building, though be mindful of any specified time limits.

Crossroads Arts District: A Hub of Dining, Art, Shopping, and Live Music

The Crossroads Arts District is one of Kansas City’s most dynamic and rapidly developing neighborhoods. Brimming with art galleries, vibrant street art, innovative cafes, and lively bars, it’s a trendy district that warrants plenty of time to explore during your visit.

Things to Do in Crossroads: Creative Exploration

Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District is the perfect place to park your car and simply wander. This fun and funky neighborhood is a treasure trove of new and interesting discoveries. From contemporary art galleries and fine dining establishments to cozy dive bars and venues featuring live music, the Crossroads Arts District offers a wealth of unique experiences to explore.

Discover Art Alley

Art Alley is a sprawling back alley that the Crossroads neighborhood has collectively embraced and revitalized by encouraging graffiti as a legitimate art form. It’s a constantly evolving canvas that celebrates urban creativity.

You could easily spend an entire afternoon in Art Alley. With a large courtyard featuring picnic tables and often scattered empty spray cans, the space is always transforming with new creations appearing regularly. This ensures that no two visits to Art Alley will ever be exactly alike, making each experience uniquely fresh and inspiring.

Where to Eat & Drink in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District:

Thou Mayest Coffee: A Cozy Industrial Escape

Thou Mayest Coffee boasts a fun, funky vibe that beautifully blends urban industrial aesthetics with Midwest kitsch. Its impossibly cool style features a spacious industrial interior lovingly adorned with vintage maps, old fishing poles, and various knick-knacks, creating a cozy atmosphere perfect for an afternoon of work or relaxation.

Thou Mayest’s coffee is exceptional, featuring single-origin beans, meticulously prepared pour-overs, and creative specialty drinks. Their hopped cold coffee with tonic, for instance, was pure heaven in a glass and as gorgeous to look at as it was to taste. It’s easy to see why this spot is a favorite for many! Beyond coffee, Thou Mayest also offers a delightful cereal and milk bar, perfect if you’re craving something delicious to accompany your brew.

Novel: Innovative Cuisine and Craft Cocktails

Novel is undeniably one of Kansas City’s hottest restaurants, celebrated for its fresh and innovative dishes, complemented by a top-notch cocktail and wine program. From exquisite house-made tagliatelle served with sweetbreads to creatively crafted toast featuring smoked pork topped with a creamy avocado flower, and decadent desserts, Novel should be at the very top of your must-visit list when seeking contemporary dining experiences in Kansas City.

Novel is fabulous for a night out with friends or a romantic date night. However, I also thoroughly enjoyed my time sitting at the bar solo. The bartenders were engaging and fun to chat with, and the lively crowd made for a great weekend atmosphere. If you’re traveling alone or simply want to treat yourself to a special evening, Novel excels even for solo diners—a major win in my book. The menu, with its diverse small plate options, unique cocktails not found elsewhere, and amazing mocktails, makes for a versatile and enjoyable dining experience for any guest.

Christopher Elbow Chocolates: Artisan Bonbon Creations

For truly delicious, one-of-a-kind bonbon creations, a stop at Christopher Elbow Chocolates is a must. These exquisite chocolates make for a delightful sweet treat or a stunning gift. Their creations, such as rosemary sea salt, browned butter, and lavender, are both unique and whimsical. Each chocolate is a vibrant work of art, brightly colored and meticulously crafted to offer an unforgettable flavor experience.

Brewery Emperial: Biergarten & Craft Delights

Brewery Emperial is far more than just a brewery; it’s a sprawling biergarten that proudly serves up an impressive selection of delicious craft beers, expertly mixed cocktails, and crave-worthy pub-food classics. Decked out in a charming hipster kitsch style, Brewery Emperial offers a lively and inviting atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to spend a relaxed weekend afternoon, enjoy a fun night out, or grab quick drinks and food for lunch, offering something for every occasion.

Record Store Hopping: A Music Lover’s Paradise

One of my absolute favorite activities in any city is exploring local record shops. Given Kansas City’s rich jazz history and profound love affair with music, it stands out as an exceptional city to unearth unique vinyl records you might not find anywhere else. The Crossroads Arts District, in particular, boasts numerous record stores. These shops offer a vast selection of both new and used LPs, making it a true paradise for serious music lovers looking to expand their collections or discover hidden gems.

Transportation and Parking in the Crossroads Arts District

The Crossroads Arts District offers ample street parking, along with numerous public parking lots. While parking can be a bit tighter on weekends, weeknights, and during special events, you’ll generally find plenty of options if you choose to drive. Alternatively, you can easily access the Crossroads Arts District by taking the convenient streetcar directly from Union Station.
